Couple PDX Questions

Opening a PDX file in Firefox .. not working for me -- i got it to work somehow using older versions or FF and it carried through, but in general, it seems it opens the text of the PDX file rather than Adobe itself

Going to Tools, Options, Applications -- PDX (Adobe Catalog Index) is generally not included. Somehow it got added to my machine but no others that I've ever used.

It seems to work in IE, or at least I can make it work -- any clue how to make it run in FF?

That idea is starting to lose some wheels .. so I thought about changing my ideas -- this part may be more important. Before I lock my PDFs, I can go to File, Properties, Advanced, and Click on Browse to attach a PDX to a PDF file.

I need to know exactly what this does -- does this mean every time I do a full Search, it will search the index, and I won't have to manually add it (even the first time -- I know it stars, but I'd love to be able to access it the very first time)? This is what I'm hoping -- but feedback would be great.

Lastly, if the attaching an index functions as I hope -- is there any way to script this to add to to a number of PDF files .. I couldnt even tel you how many we're talking here, but the set is being increased at nearly all times. I was hoping I could just add it in the rebuild of the index or something.

Thanks guys

(Platform: using XP, but I'd like it to be as versatile as possible)

...File, Properties, Advanced, and Click on Browse to attach a PDX to a PDF file.
When this PDF is opened its associated cataloged index is "mounted" and available for use until you
manually browse to and select another (in the Search window) or you go to another PDF with a different "auto-mount"
*.pdx file.

So, if you've collections of PDFs for broad or specific categories you can
--| provide a "search" PDF that has a mounted index of a given collection.
You could have a PDF with links to each of these perhaps.
--| provide a navigational TOC that mounts an index of a collection and provides links to PDFs in a collection
The second choice lets the user go to any of the linked PDFs and initiate an advanced search.

n.b., it does help to select "Always use advanced search options" for "Search" in the Preferences of
Reader - Standard - Professional. Typically this would have to be done by the user.

Add new PDF files or the same output PDF files from an authoring application then rebuild the index manually or
schedule the indexing.

Scheduling file indexing in Acrobat
As discussed in Acrobat 3D, 8 Pro and 9 Pro online help -

Quote:
You can schedule when and how often to automatically build, rebuild, update, and purge an index by using the Catalog feature and a catalog batch PDX file (.bpdx). A BPDX file is a text file that contains a list of platform-dependent catalog index file paths and flags. You use a scheduling application, such as Windows Scheduler or Scheduler for Mac OS, to display the BPDX file in Acrobat. Acrobat then re-creates the index according to the flags in the BPDX file.

great answer! .. the only question I still have would be is there any way to mount this index to all PDX files within the script.

I'm not sure if this is possible as the few topics I've come across on the web about it seem to go unanswered.

In terms of your suggestions .. I like the TOC idea, and I'm wondering if that's the way to go. Also like the links, but that may be a bit difficult with most of the files already written.

btw, adding the index works exactly how it is supposed to .. so that leaves me with:

Does anyone know a way to script this so this can be easily done with multiple PDF files?

I know Acrobat has fairly extensive command line options, and I figure there is some way to accomplish this
