Default to text selection tool

90+ % of my time is using the hand tool and comment and markup tools to annotate documents prepared by others. Since upgrading from Standard 9.1.2 to 9.4 and 9.4.5, whenever I finish using a markup tool, Acrobat defaults to the text selection tool (which I rarely use) instead of back to the hand tool. This is a huge inconvenience. Is there a fix to keep the hand tool as the default? Thanks.

Acrobat Standard 9.4, Windows

If the Hand Tool is selected when Acrobat is closed it ought to still be selected when Acrobat is restarted later.

Something that may help - Preferences > General Category > tick "Use single-key accelerators to access tools".
At completion of some activity press the "H" key to select the Hand Tool.

Be well...

Thanks for the tip on the single-key accelerator to access the Hand Tool, that will be a help.

Thanks also for confirming that the Hand Tool should be selected when Acarobat is restarted, unfortunately that is not happening. The default to the Text Selection Tool on start up is only part of the problem. Here is a typical sequence that describes the bigger part: 1)Hand Tool is selected; 2) select Arrow Tool and draw arrow; 3) draw arrow; 3) on completion of arrow, Acrobat devaults to Text Selection Tool. This happens for any tool that does not remain selected after completing the action.

I had problems setting up shared reviews with v9.1.2. Upgrade to v9.4.5 solved shared review but had problem with search function not highlighting search term and current problem. Regression to v9.4 solved search problem but current problem remained. Regressed to 9.2.0, problem remains. I am currently using Standard v9.2.0. Cost of upgrade to v10 problematic. If you or anyone has a solution other than reverting to v9.1.2 until I need to do another shared review I will be very appreciative. Thanks.

Dear fellow users,

here is the solution I found for Adobe Reader X on Windows 7 (should also work for other versions of Reader/Windows).

1. Run Regedit (the registry editor)

2. Go to key HKEY_USERS\\Software\Adobe\Acrobat Reader\10.0\Selection , where refers to the user you want to change (it will look something like this: S-1-5-21-1030456098-1922302732-3321231120-1000)3. The "Selection" key contains the following values:
"bShowKeyboardSelectionCursor"=dword:00000001
"iColumnSelectHalo"=dword:00000000
"bHandSelects"=dword:00000000
"bImagesFirst"=dword:00000000
"iSnapshotResolution"=dword:00000048
"bUseFixedSnapshotResolution"=dword:00000000
"aDefaultSelect"="Select"

4. Delete all values except for the "aDefaultSelect"

5. Change the data in "aDefaultSelect" from "Select" to "Hand"

6. That's it!

This solution is based on the answer to the same problem for the Adobe Reader for Unix which I found at http://forums.adobe.com/message/1785190 . Thanks to GauravJain and Octoploid!

ONLY THIS IS NEEDED:

EDIT > PREFERENCES > ACCESSIBILITY > OTHER ACCESSIBILITY OPTIONS
CLEAR CHECK AT "Always display the keyboard selection cursor"

THEN, THE PROGRAM WILL RESTART WITH THE TOOL (HAND TOOL OR TEXT SELECT TOOL) SELECTED WHEN IT WAS LAST CLOSED
