Hello,
I'm new to this forum and new to the feature of Acrobat. Doing some searchs on the web and here have made it clear that I need some direction on how to best proceed and learn.
My goal is to create a "cover page" where the user will be able to select from dropdown menu a chapter to read. The selection made will bring the user to the PDF document for that chapter. Each Chapter will be a separate document.
From what I have learned so far, my fear is that I will need to start writting Java scripts. Is this the case.
Thanks All. I look forward to your guidance.
I'm running Acrobat Pro. Version 7. in Windows.
Your fears are justified but it's not that bad :) You are going to need to learn some scripting or get examples with code you can examine and learn from to do this with Acrobat 7 Pro. The best site with the most comprehensive set of videos, sample files and scripts on the topic of PDF navigation is www.pdfscripting.com but it is a subscription site so is not a free resource.
Having said that, if you were to upgrade to Acrobat 8 you could create a PDF Package that might do what you want without the need for scripting. A PDF Package would open for the user with a left side panel listing all the PDF files in the package ( and you can add non-PDF files too). Do a search here for PDF Packages as there are several articles on how to create and use them here.
If you were to upgrade to Acrobat 9 Pro you could create a PDF Protfolio, the flashed up version of PDF Packages. Portfolios have built-in choices of what are called "navigators" that are essentially really fancy cover pages for all of the PDFs in your portfolio ( again you can also have non-PDF files in these too). Again, you can do a search here at acrobatusers.com for PDF Portfolios for videos, tutorials and articles about creating and using them. A BUT with Portfolios is that the fancy cover sheet part is only visbile to people viewing them in Reader 9 or Acrobat 9. If they view them in 7 or 8 they will see the old Package view and won't be able to view in version 6 or earlier since Packages and Portfolios didn't exist then.
Hope this helps,
Dimitri
