Error messages while adding header/footer

I put together several PDF documents and have been trying to add a header/footer for page numbering. I keep getting various error messages, "an error was encountered while retrieving page content" and "there ia a problem reading this Document (23). Any help would be appreciated as I'm a newbie at this.

Was this issue resolved?

Since upgrading to Acrobat Pro 9 we cannot insert a watermark or background to a PDF comprising other PDFs (only) created in Pro 8 and Pro 9.
Have tried adding the watermark using Pro 8, but it still does not work.

Thanks!

RESOLVED for those still struggling with this issue:
Print (not Save As) your combined document to PDF with a new name. Open the new PDF and you can now insert watermarks in the usual way.

That's not a "resolution" - your original PDF files are corrupted in some way, and re-frying a PDF is certainly not a recommended workflow for any error message.

I suggest running the low-level syntax check from Preflight against your PDF files to see what's wrong with them, or failing that post a copy online so we can inspect it for you.

Thanks, UVSAR, but it got the job done. There was no help to be found anywhere online or in the Acrobat help. We just kept trying one thing after another - this worked. For us it resolved the issue, we were able to add the watermark we wanted and complete the job. (And stop going crazy!)

The old file has long been deleted, sorry. If the issue crops up again, we'll repost here. It seemed like a lot of folk were posting the same issue without resolution, so we thought it might be a service to post our solution.

cheers, BPMBooks

I'm having fits trying to add headers & footers. Just bought & installed Acrobat X Pro thinking that would solve my problem, but...no! I've tried re-creating my pdfs with new version, running pre-flight - all to no avail. HELP! Have a 700 page book that really needs to get its page numbers added!

@LisaAH,
What exactly happens when you try to add them?
