funky copy and paste behavior

I'm a real neophyte at this so forgive my ignorance, but I'm trying to copy and paste from a pdf to word in Acrobat 9 Pro. When I try and use the cursor to select a word or line, it selects the entire page vertically from the point where the cursor is to an inch or so to the right. Usually I can select a word or line at a time and the control is horizontal.
 
Any suggestions?
