Highlighting cross-references

I'm a newbie. I maintain large documens (150+ pages) in Word 2003 and use Acrobat Standard 7.0 to create a PDF. The documents use cross-references extensively and want to highlight them in the PDF. I've seen PDF docs where cross-references are enclosed in a blue box - other docs have the cross-references in a different colour. How do I do this (especially the latter)

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 7.0.9, Windows

Cross-references will automatically be converted if you use the PDFMaker macro in Word (this is the menu in Word titled Adobe PDF). Double check to make sure you are converting the cross-references by selecting the "Change Conversion Settings" menu under the Adobe PDF menu in Word. Click the Word tab in this menu and check to make sure "Convert cross-references and table of contents links" is selected.
This will convert all your cross-references to links in Acrobat. The appearance of the link depends on what you have set as the default in Word. Typically this is blue and underlined but you can change this in Word before you generate the PDF.
