edit>preferences (ctrl+k), under open settings place check at 'show each document in its own window' and for good measure, clear check at 'open cross-document links in same window'

Acrobat Pro 9 does not have the 'show each document in its own window'option in Open Settings.

Related problem: User opens multiple documents and uses Typewriter tool to make notes. The Typewriter toolbar edit buttons are only active and useable for the last document opened. Regardless of how the multiple files are displayed (Tiled, for example), only one document shows the edit buttons as active. If you change the type size in that active docment, then click in a different document to use the Typewriter tool, the altered type size is used in that different document.

Will be trying out Acrobat X functionality soon. Thanks.

Thanks for the response. The original question was "How can I open multiple pdf documents in individual windows?
The answer for Acrobat Pro 9 appears to be that you cannot open multiple pdfs documents in individual windows.

Is there a way to be able to open multiple pdf documents and edit (using Typewriter tool, for example), keeping each document's Typewriter toolbar active. The way it behaves is that the last document opened retains the active Typewriter toolbar. Documents 1 - 4, as an example, has the toolbar grayed out. We have to go to the last document opened, use the increase/decrease type size or color, for example, then go back to one of the previous documents to use typewriter with the new settings.

Is there any way around this behavior?
Is Acrobat 9 intended to be used with only one document open at a time?

Thanks to anyone who can shed light on this issue!

You can open multiple documents at the same time and work on all of them with Acrobat 9 (and X), but just not in a single window. That's all.

To open 2 different Acrobat windows:

1. Open Acrobat normally
2. Go to Start then Run and type "acrobat /n"
3. Say Thank you!

Thanks for your solution! Yahoo! That DID keep the Typewriter tool bars independently active in each document and the font attributes assigned in one document did force its way into the 2nd document. I'll try this with a second shortcut that includes the /n switch, on the user's desktop to see how well it works for him.
Moving on!
