Issues in Create PDF from Web Page

I was on Acrobat pro 6. Now I am trying out Acrobat X pro ("v10").

1. I create a pdf file from a web page. When I click on a link in the new pdf file, it automatically opens that link in a web browser. Previously, in v 6.x, it defaults to "Append to the Document". How can I set Acrobat X Pro to default to "Append to Document" ?

2. I find the pdf file created from a web page has no page numbers. Again, in v6.x, there was page numbers in those files. How can I get page numbers included in the header/footer? Is the header/footer configurable?

3. In v6.x, when I want to convert a web page (into pdf) that is behind a password -- because it includes links, whereas printing to pdf does not -- I would first get the login page (in pdf). Then I can type in my password in the pdf file and click on go (right click and select Append) and I would get the next page in pdf. Now, v10 no longer does that. I keep getting different errors depending on the web site. e.g. I was testing on this web site, and get "SyntaxError: invalid XML tag syntax". Am I missing something or is there a "new" way to get the same result in v10?

TIA

1. It looks like that preference is gone, however you can still add web links to the current PDF. Hold down the SHIFT key when clicking a link and it won't open in your web browser, it will add that content to the current PDF.

2. The header & footer isn't configurable when capturing, but you can add the page numbers after the fact through Tools (on the right) > Header & Footer.

3. Try the shift-click trick on the link and let me know if that works for password protected pages.

Finally, to get some of the functionality back that you liked in version 6, submit a feature request here:

Thank you for your response.

1. Holding down the SHIFT key when clicking a link doesn't do anything for me. It simply goes to the web page.

2. I tried to insert page numbers in the upper right header using Tools. And it wipes out the existing headers AND footers -- doesn't matter whether I choose "Replace Existing" or "Add New".

3. Doesn't work either.

I would expect NEW versions to add new features WITHOUT eliminating existing features!!!

Finally, I won't waste my time to submit a feature request. I have seen numerous people asking Adobe to put back opening multiple documents in a single window for over 3 years; and nothing has happen yet. May be never??

Right-clic, not shift, to get the menu that lets choose between "open" or "add to the doc".
But this requires a "real" link, I mean something made with the Link tool or with a form field.

WebCapture features disappears one by one since version 9 release, if you need a reliable tool for webcapturing you should get a third-party tool.

Can you suggest one?

As a Mac-user I cannot help for Windows softwares, but in any case the best of all is Paparazzi!, even better than Acrobat's features : http://derailer.org/paparazzi/

TIA,

I just tested both of these again. Shift-clicking on the link DOES add it to the PDF (but maybe you were letting go of shift too soon?). It should go automatically to the downloading dialog when you shift-click the link. Right-clicking is also an excellent way to access this feature.

I also added a new header with the page number, using Add New. The existing header was preserved. I had use a smaller number for margin 0.2", to make it closer to the edge of the page, so that the page number didn't end up in a graphic.

Thanks, Kelly. Both work now.

On the Append issue: I Shift+Click on the link, the Security Warning came up, and I probably didn't hold the shift key when I click on "Allow". I knew about the right click before I posted; but I was looking for a way to reset the default to Append (like Acrobat 6.x). I choose to Allow access to the web site on a case by case basis. And it is interesting to note that Right-Click > Append does not bring up the Security Warning, whereas Shift-Click brings up the Security Warning.A followup question on the Header/Footer issue: Once I addded a new header/footer and save the file, how do I edit it [my header/footer] or delete it? "Remove" seems to remove ALL header/footer -- including Acrobat's original.

Separately, after I added the footer with the pager numbering (in the format of 1/n, can I re-number the footer page numbers if I delete a page?

TIA

P.S. For the record, yours is the "Accepted Answer" to my original question. I must have accepted the other post by accident. If I can change it, please let me know how.

P.S.2. "A followup question...." should be on a new paragraph. I thought I made a mistake and went to edit to fix it. And it is on a separate paragraph. But after I click on Submit, it gets appended to the previous paragraph. Anyone know why?

1. To update the Header & Footer (after closing & saving) choose Header & Footer > Update (you can delete content from there as well)
2. You can use Update as well, to re-number pages (after deleting)
3. No worries on which answer is accepted, as long as you found one :)
4. In order to get "A follow up question" on a new paragraph, you can use the html break tag (I can't type it exactly here, because it would break the line) use "<" "br" ">" without the quotes.

Thanks, Kelly. I tried Update before. May be I am not doing correctly -- because in addition to letting me make changes and auto-renumbering pages, it also deletes Acrobat's default header/footer (i.e. the document title, URL, date & time). The Update seems to the equivalent of "replace existing [header/footer]" after the fact. After I clicked on Update, under "Saved Settings", I tried both None Specified and the name of Setting that I added to the document. The page-number footer automatically re-numbers. Since I am not making any other changes, I simply click on OK. And the document's original header and footer disappears.

Please advise. Thank you for your patience.

It looks like an update may have broken this. Another way to update the footer (after applying a new header or footer) is to do it manually. Use Tools > Content > Edit Document Text. Click on the text and make any changes you would like.

I would recommend submitting a bug report here (I have done so as well):

Thanks for the work-around. This can be tedious if I have more than a few pages.

The new header/footer will be at the same location on every page. When I click on the new footer, it puts a box around the entire new footer. Is it possible to select the new footer on page 1 and extend that selection across pages -- 3-dimensional selection? If yes, I can simply delete the selection all at once and just add another new footer. I don't thinks so; but since I am new to this, I thought I would just ask to be sure.

Unfortunately, no. You can not select objects on more than one page at a time. Sorry.
