I get the following error when I try to batch process a document:

This page is larger than the maximum page size of 45 inches by 45 inches.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2, Windows

More of an information note than an error.
Adobe's knowledge base identifies 45 x 45 inches as a page size limit for PDFs that are Acrobat 3.0 compatible.
200x200 inches otherwise.

Thanks for the reply. Is there a way to shrink the page size?

I don't suppose you could have the source documents re-printed to a smaller page size?
Sounds like something from CAD at ANSI Engineering E size. If so, can the "authors"
print to PDF vice the plotter to paper?
Or - when scanned, can the scanner used support size reduction to a smaller page size?
I believe that higher end production equipment supports this; but, that's no help if you don't
have it, eh?

For the existing PDFs -
If you have no need for Acrobat 3.0 (PDF version 1.2) compatibility you could
play with Advanced > PDF Optimizer and save the PDFs to a newer PDF version
using Acrobat 8 Professional. I've not yet had the opportunity to try this on PDFs
above 45x45. It may be that 45x45 is the upper bound for the OCR engine Acrobat uses.

You could try printing the files through Distiller again.
Doing this to a PDF holding a scanned image often inflates the file size.
Be sure the PDF(s) produced are above 72 dpi (else OCR via Acrobat won't process the content).
Not really an optimal solution; but, "any port in a storm"...
Doing this you tweek the settings to go to a smaller page size and try using
"fit" of "shrink" to size. Then OCR.

Tried the last on a 22x17 PDF from CAD. Some raster, some renderable text.
Had Distiller print it as an image at 400 ppi (avoids the lower bound of 72 ppi)
Went to 17x11 and used "Shrink to Printable Area". OCR'd for Searchable Image (Exact).
Good to go & ended up with a smaller file size. A little over 1.1MB for the source file.
New PDF was 399KB without OCR and 415KB with OCR.
Of course, what you set for compression method and downsampling in Acrobat's Prefences and
in the Distiller Job Option used would affect output.

I too am getting the message "Acrobat could not perform recognition (OCR) on this page because: This page is larger than the maximum page size of 45 inches by 45 inches." :|

I used your recommended solution on my high resolution PDF file:
Advanced > PDF Optimizer and save the PDFs to a newer PDF version using Acrobat 8 Professional.I still get the same error message.

There's no disclaimer in the Adobe Acrobat Professional software regarding an E size drawings limit so there must be a simple solution. :)

A follow up for anyone looking over this thread.

From Adobe Acrobat related documents that discuss sending PDF to paper, 200 inches x200 inches is identified as available if coming from a PDF version newer than 1.2 (Acrobat 3.x). 45 inches x 45 inches is identified as the limiting page size, for PDF version 1.2 (Acrobat 3.x) when printing.

While I've been stoking the search engines, the only information that identifies that the page size limit, of OCR (rather than print) is 45 x 45 has been and continues to be the alert box that one can encounter with larger page sizes.
Most likely there is some documentation tucked away somewhere - I've just not come across it yet .Be well...

I'm using Adobe Acrobat Professional 8 and scan from an HP All-in-One to create a PDF document. When I try to optimize for OCR, I get the mssage that "This page is larger than the maximum page size of 45 inches" even though it is a single, 8 x 11 page. I've reinstalled the HP and the drivers are up to date. Any thougths would be appreciated. Thanks!

first, check document size. here'show: on preferences (ctrl+K) > category 'page display', under 'page content and information' section place check at 'always show document page size'. next, crop the document size as needed. use 'crop page' tool on document menu. if necessary, rescan (be sure to double check the output size). there's no need to reinstall acrobat or HP drivers.
