Hello!
 
A client would like to scan documents using not only OCR, but also:
 
HCR - Handprint Character Recognition
OMR - Optical Mark Recognition
ICR - Intelligent Character Recognition
 
Among other things, they want to be able to read and interpret bar codes.
 
I know Acrobat X can handle OCR. Is there a way of extending these capabilities? I pretty much believe there isn't, at least right now with Adobe solutions.
 
Any ideas?

You are correct, Acrobat doesn't offer these other Recognition features. There are some third party products that do. Here is one:
