"The organizer database is damaged..."

Answered

I have several users experiencing the following error when they try to resave changes to an existing PDF.

"The organizer database is damaged and will be reset the next time Acrobat is launched. Quit the Application and close any currently oppened web browsers."

If the user cancels out the error and hits the save button again it works fine.

Each work station is configured with:
Windows XP
Office 2007
CCH Accounting suite
Adobe Pro 8

Thanks for your help.

You might want to try to remove files from the Acrobat Organizer folder. This forces Acrobat to rebuild the Organizer database. This process replaces any damaged files in the Organizer that may be causing the error message.

To remove the files from the Acrobat Organizer folder:

1.Choose Start > Run.2.In the Open text box, type:%UserProfile%\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0\Organizer80.

3.Delete or move all files from this directory.

This instruction was taken from the following technical note.

Could you advise how to repair this on Acrobat 9 Pro Extended on Vista Home Premium, please?
Thank you.

The Organizer file in A9 is located at:
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Organizer90

EDIT -- Acrobat 9 does not have an Organizer folder and the default location for the file for Vista is:
C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Organizer90

I am using Acrobat Pro 9.0 on a Vista machine. I too am receiving the error message, "The Organizer database is damaged and will be reset the next time Acrobat is launched."

I contacted Adobe Technical Support and they indicated that with 9.0 there is NO Organizer folder, but instead an Organizer90 file. They indicated that they cannot locate this file on their Vista machine and would get back to me on how to solve this issue. They also indicated that it behaves differently on an XP machine than on a Vista machine. Puzzling.

I would like to use this feature of Acrobat, but cannot use the Organizer, as it resets after each use.

Any ideas?

Have you tried doing a Repair Acrobat Installation from under the Help menu?

Do you have "Show Hidden Files and Folders" on for Windows Vista? If not, there is a suggestion for setting this at:

I find this response by lkassuba to be very strange.

The OP asked about the error on a Vista system with Acrobat 9.0. lkassuba answered to look in the folder

%UserProfile%\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Organizer90

But doesn't she know that on Vista system there is no folder, anywhere on C: drive, called "Application Data"?

Furthermore, I have Vista Ultimate and Acrobat 9.0 Pro, and there is NO folder called "Organizer90" or "Organizer*" ANYWHERE on my system. I have thoroughly checked using a file search program that searches ALL files and directories, including hidden and system files.

I have read elsewhere that Acrobat 9.0 doesn't use a folder "Organizer90" at all.

So this advice she gives is very bad. And the problem still remains for me.

I mention that the "file" not "folder" for Organizer in Acrobat 9 is located at:
%UserProfile%\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Organizer90

which is true for XP. For Windows Vista the default location is at:

C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Organizer90

So, only the location was incorrectly listed for Vista.

I have the same problem with Vista Ultimate, Vista Business and Acrobat 9 Pro Extended.
It was working perfectly for several months until yesterday. I have reviewed all the posts regarding this issue both in this forum and others and as a computer engineer who makes a living on these issues, I have attempted all of the above suggestions.
Now, this said, there is no "Organizer90" folder in the path C:\Users\[USERNAME]\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\ ...... it simply is NOT there...the path is there (after enabling to view hidden and system files) but the folder is not....neither in my installation nor in any of the Vista installations of the customers I service....
We are NOT TALKING about Windows XP – We ARE talking about VISTA.
I have been following this issue closely and find very interesting that no one from Adobe has shown any concern to solve it since it is becoming more and more prevalent...

Hi roberthabib,

This thread at the Adobe User to User forums has a fix if the Organizer90 file is not on your system- it worked for at least one person. Hope it fixes this issue for you as well.

Hello Dimitri, Thank you for looking at this.

I tried both methods recommended in the link: created the folder....started acrobat, got the error. Closed acrobat, restarted, got the error again. Deleted the folder. Opened another file, closed it and got the same error.

Also tried with the file method: created the file and removed the txt extension. Repeated the above procedure with different files. No change.

The problem is still there.

Hi again,

This is a long shot, but you mentioned Acrobat was working until just recently. Did you run the updater since it began having problems? I saw an old Knowledgebase article about problems with corrupting the Organizer database on exit in Acrobat 7.
It states "In rare instances, the Acrobat 7.0.0 or 7.0.1 Organizer database is corrupted on exit if the update manager has been run. This issue is resolved in the Acrobat 7.0.5 update."

One of the fixes was to remove all files from the Updater folder.

I know this is for a much OLDER version if Acrobat, but it is not unheard of for an old issue previously fixed to come back in a new version :(

Here's the link to the article-

Thanks again Dimitri,

No....I have not done any updates.

The computers affected are from a company where I provide the network administration services. I have all programs blocked so they cannot do automatic updates so I can make sure that only the updates that I want to happen and apply actually do happen when I need them to. It's the only way to keep a stable environment.

The problem started about 3 weeks ago. They had been working without issues for about 10 months.

I did check the updater log file just to check if any update had occurred without me knowing about it. None has occurred.

I was about to reinstall it, but after looking up the issue in Google, I realized that many people were having the same issue and in my experience, reinstalling acrobat sometimes becomes a big problem with license and corruption issues so I have been resisting the urge to do this.

I will keep an eye open on this user community. Hopefully someone will figure this out soon.

Sometimes the Preferences can become damaged, and some custom settings for the Organizer are stored in the Preference folder. Have you tried re-creating the Preferences folder? The 4th step on this technical note describes how to re-create the Preferences.

Hello Ikassuba,

I followed your suggestion:

To re-create the Acrobat Preferences folder:

Quit Acrobat.
In Windows Explorer, go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0 folder and move the Preferences folder to another location (for example, C:\Temp).
Launch Acrobat.

(in my case it was 9.0 folder)

I did NOT have a "Preferences" folder at this location but I did have a "Cache", "Capture3D" and "Updater" folders under 9.0.

I moved them to a temp folder.

Opened Acrobat.....opened a document, closed the document......the problem is still here....got the message: " "The organizer database is damaged ...."

Thank you for trying....

Robert.

Does this error occur when you open a PDF in the browser or while in Acrobat? Do you have other versions of Acrobat and/or Reader installed on the same system?
Have you tried creating a new user account with the same permissions?

The error happens when you save a new pdf document, or when you close an existing one or when you try to use the organizer.

No...I do not have Adobe Reader or any other version of Acrobat installed. And yes, I have tried using it as Robert and also as the system administrator: the problem comes up in both accounts.

I just created a new 3rd account ......just to rule out anything else.....and just in case you were going to ask, I don't have any viruses or spyware on the systems (remember...the same problem is happening on 2 different user workstations which were installed at about the same time 10 months ago).

Generally the Preferences folder on Vista is hidden. Have you tried viewing 'hidden" folders?

Oh...I'm sorry...I thought that you had read my previous post but just realized it was with Dimitri with whom I had the conversation.....YES....both hidden and system file viewing has been enabled on the tools-folder options-view-advanced settings .... the folder is just not there on any of the Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro Extended installations on the Vista computers in the company.....even on the ones that are working correctly and not bringing up this Organizer error....

Thank you again Dimitri and Ikassuba for your time and support,

This morning I got fed up of all the user calls complaining about how this issue was interrupting their work so I decided to disable the Organizer in the meantime so they can work without having to deal with the error screen popup.

In case it helps someone this is how I solved it for the time being until Adobe comes up with a solution:

In order to do this open Acrobat:

1. Go to Edit-Preferences.
2. In the Categories Column (on the left) select and highlight Documents.
3. In the section “Open Settings” go to where it says: “Remember files in Organizer History for:”
4. Select: “Don’t Remember PDFs”.
5. Click on OK below.
6. Close Acrobat.
7. Now test it opening any file with which you were having problems with. You should not get the error "The Organizer database is damaged and will be reset the next time Acrobat is launched” anymore.

It’s a shame that we cannot use the Organizer anymore but at least you won’t have the annoying error screen constantly popping up and interrupting your work.

Hope this helps.

Anyone other than me experiencing this on a Mac?

I'm using Acrobat 8 Professional on a 2 x 2.66 GHz Dual-Core Intel machine running OS X 10.5.5. Other Adobe apps are all CS3.

The error appeared each time I saved a document. My IT Mac specialist wasn't able to resolve the issue using any of the customary fixes, and ultimately he opted to do a full rebuild. I'd love to know if there's an easier fix for this in case it comes up again!

Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

There is one answer I found that works.

The problem I'm having is because I am using a Domain User loggin to launch the program.

When I specified the 'runas' command and gave a local user account to use, it worked fine-no errors.

It isn't a good solution for enterpise maybe, but it got around the problem for me.

No ... I am not.

Actually .... after the latest Adobe update..... my solution above, doesn't work anymore. Now it's happening to my personal laptop (not only in my clients computers) which is definitely not even a member of any domain......after a year or more, does Adobe have any answers to this issue?

Never mind..... I have ammended my post from Dec 2008:

In case it helps someone this is how I solved it for the time being (It has been working for me) until Adobe comes up with a solution (They are having the same issue posted over and over at the Adobe Forums):

In order to do this open Acrobat:

1. Go to Edit-Preferences.
2. In the Categories Column (on the left) select and highlight Documents.
3. In the section “Open Settings” go to where it says: “Remember files in Organizer History for:”
4. Select: “Don’t Remember PDFs”.
5. Click on OK below.
6. Close Acrobat.
7. Close all open windows of Internet Explorer and Outlook that might be viewing an html email (just close all other open windows)...
8. Go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0 (make sure you have enabled Vista to "show hidden files and folders".
9. Under the 9.0 folder, create a new file called Organizer90 (not a folder - a NEW text file without any extension) and make this new file "Read Only".
10. Organizer should not bother you anymore but you cannot use it anymore either (bummer)...

Hope this helps...

It’s a shame that we cannot use the Organizer anymore but at least you won’t have the annoying error screen constantly popping up and interrupting your work.

My Acrobat Pro 8.1.6 (on Vista Home edition) no longer records histories (days, months, etc.). I tried several repairs and updates, without luck; and I tried "Ctrl-K, documents, with resets between 1 and 10 days. The programsworked fine for many months (installed to a second partition, "archiving" pdf-saves going 9+back. Is there a fix, short of reinstalling?

I'm sorry Qaz.....I pressed "submit" without finishing my comment above.....What I was trying to ask you is if when you say "....no longer records histories...." are you refering to the Organizer History? If so.....then this is what you "should" expect if you "Disable" the Organizer in order to avoid getting the annoying message "Organizer Database is damaged........" Once you efectively disable the Organizer the you will no longer be able to see its history.....

Thanks, Robert. I've not (nowingly) changed organizer settings. I noticed the organizer (first time) only after I had lost my "file ... histories... (e.g., 1 day, 1week, .., which remain greyed out). I also searched my directories (without "unhiding, yet, as I recall). I was just about to insert a text file (still looking for the folder) as mentioned above, when you kindly responded. 20m ago I fired up another "install-repair", which shows a 20%-completed progress bar. I'm eager to learn more about organizer folders and histories after (hopefully) regaining my use of (seemingly) unlimited "open files" recall.

Qaz,

Go to C:\Users\Username\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\8.0 and delete or rename the Organizer80 file....if your "lucky" it will start working again.....

The preferences are located in the Menu Bar under Edit....

My AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobtat8.0 folder is empty.
I've re-visited preferences numerous times to ensure settings (24m history for organizer, 10d history-retrieves under "History", which display fine, but not as to the 7d, 14d... drop down side. I tried clearing histories and juxtaposing oranizer settings between off and 24m.

My AppData\Local\Adobe\Acrobat8.0 folder (conaining no Organizer80) does contain folders "cache" and "updater". Cache contains a "search80" file.

I find no organizer-file other than an organizer70 in roaming\adobe\acrobat\8.0. I'm beginning to feel like a "hard case" :)

Don't feel bad.....all of us have been after Adobe for years to fix this problem where the "Organizer" doesn't work.....at least you are not getting the annoying message "the organizer database is damaged....."
All the rest of us have had to resort to ways of disabling it to be able to work so your actually "lucky"...lol... Yours got disabled by itself...

I really hope it keeps working.... I did the same and when some of the updates came in (I don't know which) the problem came up again.......It had been working great for months :(

You might want to monitor which updates come in (both from Adobe and from Microsoft) and which one damages the "Organizer"..... that way we can do what Adobe should be doing and come up with a solution......this problem has been lingering for years....:rolleyes

In Windows 7 and Acrobat 9 the Organizer file is generally located at C:\Users\{username}\AppData\LocalLow\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0\Organizer90

Try renaming this to see if it corrects the problem.

如何解决Adobe Acrobat 9.0在XP系统中的错误:“管理器”数据库已损坏,但会在acrobat下一次启动时重置。请退出应用程序并关闭目前打开的网络浏览器。”

操作步骤如下:
1. 打开Adobe Acrobat 9.0,
2. 打开: 文件\管理器,等待5秒左右。
3. 打开: C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0 (之前需要显示隐藏的文件。)
4. 复制Organizer90,粘贴在相同文件夹下,得到:复件 Organizer90,
5. 退出Adobe Acrobat 9.0,
6. 将文件“复件 Organizer90”改名为“Organizer90,”
7. 重启Adobe Acrobat 9.0
解决问题!

I suppose I have solved the "organizer" problem of Adobe Acrobat 9.0 on Win XP : "The Organizer database is damaged and will be reset the next time Acrobat is launched. Quit the application and close any currently open web browsers."

Do as follows:

1. open Adobe Acrobat 9.0,
2. open file\organizer.
3. open C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Adobe\Acrobat\9.0 (after enabling to view hidden and system files)
