PDF show this { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z } not table of contents as in Word

Hi and thanks in advance for any help.

RE: PDF show this { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z } not table of contents as in Word

When converting Word doc with a table of contents and as the 'Save Adobe PDF File As' box comes up I can see that the table has toggle to { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z }.

When the conversion completes this code { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z } shows on the first page of the pdf. The Word document reverts back to the normal table of contents.

In Word my 'change conversion settings' are the defaults. And checking or unchecking 'use CTRL+Click to follow hyperlink' under Tools\Options \ Edit tab does not help.

I also create a brand new test document and the issue persists.

Thanks for your time.

Hi,
Two things to play with.
#1. Make sure field codes are not showing in the MS Word file.
#2. Prior to opening MS Word for work that is to result in printing an output PDF file.
When MS Word wakes up it immediately maps the metrics of whatever the default printer driver is.
Changing the printer driver mid-stream confuses MS Word.

From some trials with MS Word files (2000, 2003, 2007), with Adobe PDF set as my default printer.
I was able to output PDFs that did not show the field codes from Acrobat 8 3D, 8 Professional, and Acrobat 9 Professional Extended.
This was regardless of whether or not I had TOC field codes showing in my Word files.
As Acrobat 7's PDFMaker is compatible with Office 2003, I'd expect to get the same output as obtained with Acrobat 8/Office 2003.
This does presume Acrobat 7.x has been walked through the full sequence of updates.
Dot release 7.1.0 is many updates in arrears (7.1.0 > 7.1.1 > 7.1.2 > 7.1.3 > 7.1.4).

{ TOC \o "1-3" \h \z}
Field = TOC
--| switch \0 = build toc by using outline levels vice TC entries
--| switch "1-3" = show levels (outline levels) 1 through 3
--| switch \h = hyperlink the entries and page numbers within the toc
--| switch \z = hide page numbers within the toc when shown in Web Layout view

Yikes. I have already updated and rebooted 5 times. Is there not a quicker way to do this all at once? I tried looking for online info but nothing under 7. Did the life cycle for version 7 end yet? Then maybe I can get approval to upgrade to current.
Thanks for your reply.

P.S. Does having the MS Compatibility Pack for 2007 Office system cause issues with version 7?
I thought I saw somewhere where version 7 did NOT work with MS Office 2007.

Thanks again.

Hi TAV,

Yes, I believe that the life cycle for Acrobat 7.x has passed.

Adobe Acrobat 8.1 added compatibility for Microsoft Office 2007 and OpenXML documents.
So, if you are in Office 2007 and want the functionality and features available with Acrobat
you need Acrobat 8.x (followed up with all outstanding updates).

Should you find yourself in Vista, you need Adobe Reader / Acrobat 8.1 or better.
Earlier releases not test & won't be updated for support.Should you find yourself in Windows 7, you need Adobe Reader / Acrobat 9.2 or better.

Hello daka

Thanks for your past replies and your patient I am back on this topic again. I tried for many days to update Adobe 7.x to the latest version in the 7 series but after many, many reboots I gave up. The Help About menu never did show what version it was up to so…. I have removed it and installed version Adobe Acrobat Pro 9 under the 30 day trial period. It did download an update pack and the version is now 9.3.0. Unfortunately my issues continue. The table of contents does not convert and still shows { TOC \o "1-3" \h \z } in its place

When converting other Word documents even their document path and page number do now show 'normal'. They come up as { FILENAME \p } and } PAGE { (in a vertical position).

Needless to say but this is very very frustrating when this all use to work so effortlessly before.

Any ideas or suggestions would be very much appreciated. Thank you again.
