PDFs no longer searchable

I used to be able to do a search within the PDFs on my computer. However, once I upgraded to Adobe Reader X, I can no longer search within those same PDFs.
 
How can I make them searchable again?
 
Adobe Reader 10.0.1
Windows 7

Update:

the Advanced Search function within Adobe Reader does still work.

But the Windows 7 Search function (which is the one I always use) still returns no results when I search for something thats on a pdf
