Problem Substituting Fonts

Hello,
I am trying to edit a PDF document that someone else made on Quark Xpress. I just wanted to change one letter. I'm using Acrobat 8 professional. I don't have the font used on my computer, so I tried simply substituting another font that was similar, and I get the following error message:
The change to a different font was not done because the chosen font and the font encodings in the document differ and could not be resolved.

Could anyone explain that to me? And is there a solution to this? I'm thinking maybe it's a mac to PC conversion issue as well (I'm on a PC), but I don't know how to fix it.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.1, Windows

Unfortunately, if you open the properties dialog box and try to change the font and Acrobat won't let you do it, you can't make the change in Acrobat.

If you have Adobe Illustrator or CorelDraw, you can do this:

Click the Select Object tool on the block of text where you want to change the character.

Press the Alt (Option on Mac) key and double click (alternately you can open a context menu and choose Edit Object). This option will open the application you have set as a default in the TouchUp properties (by default it's Adobe Illustrator if Illustrator is installed).

Edit the character in your vector art application (Illustrator or CorelDraw).

Choose File > Save (be certain to not use Save As).The text change is dynamically changed in the PDF document.
