Reader 8.1

I have Reader 8.1. I use Firefox, not IE. I am running XP Pro. When I open a pdf document via the Internet, Reader works fine and promptly opens the document. However, when I close the document and exit Reader, the Adobe Updater will not close and ties up my system resources, including CPU useage and memory. My system slows to a crawl. What can I do to get the updater to close and give my computer back to me? Thanks.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Standard 8.0999999999999996447286321199499070644378662109375, Windows

If the puny updater makes your system crawl, it sounds more like there's something wrong with your system.

Once you've opened a PDF in the web-browser, Reader is running, and it doesn't quit just because you close that document (any more than Word quits when you close a Word file).

If you REALLY need to kill the process, you may do so through the Task Manager.

If you want to simply turn off the Updater, you can Select "Check for Updates" from the Help menu, then turn off auto updating via Preferences. I'm not sure if that will solve your problem, but it's a place to start.

Thanks for your answer. When I was having the problem, updater continued to run and hog after I closed the pdf document and after I exited from glorious Adobe. I thought about killing it through Task Manager but when I selected it for kill I got a warning message that caused me to back off. Quite frankly, I don't recall what I did next, but now everything is working very well. When I open an Adobe document, it opens quickly and crisply. When I exit the document and then exit Adobe, I check task manager in both the Processes and Performance tabs, and Updater is gone and my cpu useage and memory useage are back down where they should be and other programs click along like they should.

Thanks, again, for your answer.
