Reader hangs and pegs CPU usage!

I can no longer open PDF files on my PC. I'm running 6.0 Reader on WinXP. It started fairly randomly one day, when I would click a link to a PDF, it would just hang. On task manager the AcroRd32.exe process would peg the CPU usage to nearly 100%. I've left it for over 10 minutes, and it still it never gets anywhere. I can end-task it fairly easily, but I've still not been able to look at my file.

I tried saving the file to disk, and opening it manually, rather than inside a browser, same problem, I get the splash screen for AcroRd and nothing more, the process just hangs again.

I tried downloading the 7.0 version of Acrobat, and it didn't change a thing, so I uninstalled it completely, and reinstalled, and still no good. Tried going back to 6.0 again and still no good. Strangely, when I have reinstalled, I am able to open the Reader the first time and view a PDF but when I go to close Reader, it then hangs and any subsequent attempts to launch the program also hang.

Any ideas on why this may be happening?

Thanks!
Cosmo

Check for a virus.

Check file associations in Windows.

Check the system registry for duplicate references of Acrobat or Reader.

Run a system restore to a date Reader was working properly.

Check system requirements for installing Acrobat.

Also, try running a registry checker program....you may have a bunch of system wide programs that are "expressing" themselves with the Acrobat program.

Acrobat is probably the program I use most often and I'm learning more every day.
