Save function

I have several files that were probably created in an older version of Acrobat. I use 8.0 at this time. When I make changes and attempt to reduce file size I get a message that says it is read only. I have to change the name and then go through the whole save process again with reduce file size. How can I avoid having to change the name? It adds extra steps and I sometimes am working with as many as 400 files.

I would surmise that this is not an issue with Acrobat, but the file itself. Right click on the file name and choose properties (assuming Windows here, MAC guys may want to chime in). Look at the Attributes flags at the bottom of the properties window. If the file is set to Read-Only, you cannot overwrite it. To do so, uncheck the box and click on Apply.

Where this came from? One possible situation is that files copied off of a CD-ROM will many times have their attributes automatically set to Read-Only. This action is becase a CD-ROM is a read-only media (once finalized). Windows automatically sets the read/write flag to the files on the disk to read-only when the disk is written. Files copied off the disk just retain that flag.

Hope this helps.
