Services stay running after close? - Pro 6.0

I have Adobe Pro 6.0 After I make a document into a PDF and close the program, there are two resource-sucking services that stay running until I manually cancel them in task manager:

1. acrotray.exe
2. acrodist.exe

This is a major pain! Any ideas what is wrong?

Nothing, this is the way Acrobat and distiller initialize faster. In some versions these programs are automatically started when the system is booted or a user logs in. Just look in the "Start Up" folder of Windows.

"Look"....and do what.....?

Also there is no Windows/Startup folder I can find.

Just to see that there is a special startup routine for Acrobat. You can delete the item or move it to another folder so that it is started when Windows starts.

The "Start" folder is seen by selecting the "Start" button then select the "All Programs" and the program folders will popup. There will be a folder labeled "StartUp". Adobobe has been putting a special program in this location since Windows 98 and Acrobat 5 and it is still there with Windows XP and Acrobat 8.

You can also see these programs listed as running using Windows Task Manager program or the "Services" section of Windows Control Pannel.

Thanks but there is nothing there - in fact I use a startup management app to minimize superfluous services and I specficially turned off the "Adobe Assistant" service when I installed it a year ago.

Any other suggestion? Thanks!

And if those services are not running when Acrobat is started, Acrobat will start them and not shut them down. If that is a big problem, you might look at some other solution.

While I appreciate your input that's not making sense to me. From what I understand your'e saying I have two choices:
1. Leave "Acrobat Assistant" on all the time/don't suppress it via my startup management program. This option prepetually sucks resources unnecessarily.

2. Have AA off, as I do now, and have the two services I mentioned in my original post stay on after Adobe Pro close. This sucks resources.

You'll note that neither option is good. Having services stay on after a program closes smells to me to be either a core program bug or something I need to configure inside the program preferences.

Anyone else have suggestions? Does anyone from Adobe read these posts?
