total newbie question - editing text in a document

I am a total newbie w Adobe Acrobat 8 Pro. I have some job description documents that have a bunch of text in what I call boxes. Editing same is a nightmare.

I edited some simple text content in documents to remove the old company name and replace it with the new name. Pretty easy, mostly because the names were about the same length, otherwise I would be ripping out the remaining hair on my head. I used Tools/Advanced editing/TouchUp Text Tool for that.

But, I have a bit of text that WILL NOT be moved. I only know enough that this software is not user friendly, and wish I could attach the file for group review.

When I open TouchUpReadingOrder tool, it is #53, on the left hand side of the 2nd page, in what I would call a MS Word text box. I tried the typewriter tool - a total pain. Not the font I want, can't delete the text that is below the box, or move it, or anything.

I am completely baffled by the Tag as text/as Paragraph as whatever language Adobe wants me to learn, let alone the code I've seen from some quick net research.

I'm sure this is great software, I just don't have a week to be coached in its complexities. At the doddering age of 55 I am less than interested in "learning Adobe". I am not a Comp Sci grad, or a programmer, I am a simple man who needs a simple thing done.

Open question to Adobe, "Why is your software SO hard to use? Can't you issue a menu driven version that is EASY?? Maybe that doesn't do EVERYTHING, just does most things in a quick & dirty manner? I think your market would explode if you had an easy to use product. As it is, it's a real pain in the neck. Hate to say it, but this is worse than MS Word or Excel, IMO.

Judging from what I've seen so far, a written explanation would probably not really help. Please remember I am a total newbie, and really have no knowledge base for this kind of problem. Detailed step-by-step help in solving this is what I need. I have tried numerous types of editing, done some online research, and yet cannot find a solution.

Again, your help is humbly requested. Thanks.

Hi Mark-Cambridge,

Sorry you are having such a hard time with Acrobat. One reason for this is that PDF is really a finished file format, not a content editing tool, nor an authoring tool. That is what other applications like Microsfot Word, Excel, etc are for- for creating the documents that are then converted to PDF. Your misconception about Acrobat and PDF's main purpose is probably the number one cause of your frustration.

Yes, you can do some minor editing of PDFs with built-in tools, but notice the tools are named "Touch up" for a reason- they are for minor editing jobs only.

Your best course of action is to get the original documents- and believe me they did not start out as PDFs- they were converted to PDFs from some other authoring application. Do the editing in the original format and application- then convert to PDF with Acrobat for a final finished format that can be viewed with consistency and fidelity across platforms and viewers- the major power feature of the PDF format.

Hope this helps,

Dimitri

Dimitri - thanks for your explanation - I managed to get some in-house help and fix the problem (although now it's a "Form" and I need it not have that purple line across the top. I'll take care of that next . Thanks!
