Unable to install Acrobat Reader 10

When I download and install, I get a message that it does not have sufficient permissions to continue, and that I'm supposed to log on as the Administrator. Well, I am logged on as the Administrator, and it created a folder named Active X that is un accessable, and I can not delete it, or change the attributes. I also disabled my antivirus protection.
 
I am using XP Pro w/SP3 on an IBM Thinkpad T43 Centrino 1.8Ghz, 2GB RAM, 120GB Free on HDD
 
I have a screeshot of the exact message, but since there is no way to post it, I suppose we have to go about this the hard way.
 
Now I'm screwed as I do not have any reader, and this one won't install.
 
Why does Microsoft, and now Adobe create packages that when they fail, leave the system disabled?

The ActiveX folder is located at \Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Acrobat\ActiveX. Do you have access to this location? Have you tried right-clicking on the downloaded installer and selecting 'Run as Administrator"?

I am logged on as administrator, and as a second measure, did the above. Same result. The folder mentioned above is not accessable. Even when I double click on it, I get the window with the flashlight as though it is searching, and then windows informs me it can not find any such folder.

Now I am unable to downgrade, or upgrade. It shows Adobe reader in my Add/Remove programs, but when I click on remove, windows tells me that it is unable to uninstall the package because it can not be found. I try to reinstall ReaderX and it tells me that the product is already installed. Same for 9.4, it tells me it's already installed.

What an utter mess this has turned out to be. This system is completely destroyed in as far as Adobe Reader goes. I even rolled back to a check point before installing it, and nothing changes. It is acting as though it has been infected by a virus, and I'm starting to beleive that is what this supposed update really is.

Does anyone have the manual uninstal for Adobe Acrobat Reader 10?
