Unable to open PDF files

I currently have Reader v8.2.5, which I would like to uninstall because it will no longer open PDF files ("Invalid plugin detected. Adobe Reader will now close.") However, when I go to ADD REMOVE PROGRAMS to uninstall it, I get "This patch package could not be opened." so I can't uninstall it. Further, I downloaded Reader vX which seemed to go fine, but when I try to open it, I get "This application has failed to start because MAPI32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem." When I try to reinstall, I get an error stating that the program has already been installed. If I try to repair it, it appears to finish (it says "complete") but I get the same message ("This application has failed to start because MAPI32.dll was not found. Reinstalling the application may fix this problem.") when I try to open it. I've been told my anti-virus program may be impacting the download so I turned it off but it didn't seem to make a difference. Any suggestions?

Reader 8.0, Windows

Could be a corrupt or outdated mapi32.dll file. Try http://pcsupport.about.com/od/findbyerrormessage/a/mapi32-dll-not-found-missing-error.htm for ideas on how to troubleshoot that.

Try going into the "help" tab and select the update.

Thank you acrobat42. The pcsupport site provided numerous suggestions. Although the first few I tried were not successful, I believe two suggestions fixed my problem: redownloading recent Windows XP updates and adjusting my anti-virus software. I now can run Adobe Reader X, although I still can't uninstall Reader 8. For now, I can live with that!
Rowdy4040ewg- I couldn't get the product to open, so I couldn't use the HELP tab- but thanks for trying to help out!
