Attach as Adobe PDF via Email

Hi Experts!

In Outlook 2003, when sending an e-mail, there is an "Attach as Adobe PDF" option on the toolbar. By clikcing on this, it will allow you to convert any files into a PDF. However, we wish to reduce the file size of our pictures that we have. I noticed it seems to only reduce the file size of ".BMP" (Bitmap) color picture files and NOT ".JPG" (JPEG) coolor picture files. When I convert JPG's to PDF, it actually increases the file size rather than reducing it. Why is this happening and how can I rectify this issue? Thank you for your time!

Thanks for your message. JPG files are already compressed, and depending on your Adobe PDF Settings, won't compress anymore. That's why you see the file sizes stay the same or get slightly larger (from "extra information" that's put in the PDF file).

Try changing your default settings in Acrobat Distiller from Standard to Smallest File Size. Any recompression of JPEG's will affect the quality of your images so check the resulting PDFs.

Hope that helps,

I'm a newbie and I have acrobat 9 pro. I want to send the PDF through email without using Outlook to process it. I know this is possible our server is configured, but I can't find any scripts for it. The PHP seems to be only for web - based forms. Is this possible? Can someone point me in the right direction? Thanks

I see you're mentioning PHP. I assume your server has PHP installed. You can submit as PDF to your server(Provided you made your PDF to have save rights for reader), and then have the PDF e-mailed using the PHP command: mail(); or now that you're dealing with it on your server, you can just insert it into a secure directory for you to download at a later time, or extract the information and insert that into a database. However you do it is entirely up to what your web developer can support.

In most cases, I don't see why a PDF needs to be sent, as it's larger than what most people are going to be sending anyway; which generally happens to be text they enter into form fields. The easier way to go about this would be to submit as FDF or HTML, which can go through HTTP(S) and PHP can handle both of them if need be. Plenty of options available to you. JavaScript API Reference is a good read for getting started with Arobat PDF. Do a search for "SubmitForm" and it gives you five pages of information and examples of use.

I have made a PDF with hyperlinks from an InDesign document. The links work fine while the PDF is open in acrobat reader.

But, when this PDF is included as an attachment in an email (I use Apple's Mail software), although it displays in the email, the links do not work. (The end user would have to double-click the PDF and launch reader in order to use the links).

Are there settings I can change when I create the PDF, or in Acrobat (I have Acrobat Pro) that would fix this problem, so that an end user could click on links while it is still sitting in the email window (that is, without launching acrobat reader first?)

Thanks very much for any tips or advice you can provide.

Is there a free pdf program, that behaves just like the "Adobe PDF Writer" does? specifically for what I am trying to accomplish?

I know there are tons of PDF programs out there, but finding one that is free and will work for me, is a little difficult especially when I am not too sure as to what I need to look for.

Acrobat 9 standard, with .PDF doc open, when attaching open document to e-mail, acrobat renames the document from: xxx doc namexxx.pdf, to: xxx doc namexxx.pdf - ADOBE ACROBAT.PDF. How do we get rid of the additional extension?
