Multiplying in Forms

Hi, I'm very new to creating forms, I apologize if this is a simple answer.
I have a form in which I'd like the user to select how many items they want and the form to multiply the items by the cost.
I don't know the formula for this. I need to select the correct fields and then multiply that by the cost... is this a Acrobat formula or a JavaScrip formula? Is there a web site that lists the formulas for me?
I did search this forum a little bit, but realized I don't understand the script enough in order to come up with my own formula.
I have an Acrobat book from the library, but it doesn't explain this for me. The book says that I may need the 'Extending Acrobat forms with JavaScript' book or download an 'AJS Object Reference' from the Adobe web site, which I did not find.

Click the "How to" drop down menu on this page. Click Tutorials, select search by author, type in Ted Padova and download his tutorial titled "101 eForm Tips".
In it are several options for auto multiplying numbers.

I found the document, but I'm not finding the answer I need. I found a page that says to 'create a document level javascript' and do the following formula.... I don't know what a document level javascript is. Maybe I was on the wrong page: Tip #53 Simplified Field Notation.
I'm really, really a beginner here. I need a more basic explanation.
