Required field validation

Can anyone tell me, very specifically, how to get a required field to display a message if the field is left blank or the entry doesn't match the validation pattern when then user tabs out of the field, not just when the form is submitted. Also, I want the focus to stay on that field until the entry is correct. And I want this to happen on the Client side. I have tried about a dozen variations of JavaScript code, and nothing works.

I would greatly appreciate any help.
