Acrobat 8 Font Baseline Bug

I am seeing a bug in some PDFs created using the cfdocument tag (iText) in ColdFusion 8. In a line of text the font baseline will suddenly jump up one or two pixels and remain that way for the rest of the line.

The bug is 100% reproducible. It happens with every font and every font size. Fonts are not embedded. The text is not scaled up or down. It shows up in Acrobat 8.0.0, but not in Foxit Reader or in Acrobat Reader 9.0.0 and the way it appears on screen is how it prints. I have no control over which PDF viewer people will use, so I need to get this to work in Acrobat 8.

I have been troubleshooting this bug for many hours now with no luck. Does anyone have any suggestions on where to look for the solution?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.0, Windows

If I embed fonts the problem goes away, but the file size increases by 300%, so that isn't a great solution.

You might want to check with the folks at iText since you're not using an Adobe tool to create your PDFs.

I'm using Adobe ColdFusion to create the PDFs. It seems like the issue is with Acrobat 8 though since that seems to be the only reader that has the problem, which is why I posted this here instead of on a ColdFusion message board. I suppose it could be an issue with ColdFusion, although it is unusual that the problem goes away in Acrobat 9, which suggests that it is some bug in Acrobat that has been fixed.

There have been several changes with regards to font viewing and displaying in Acrobat. What type of font are you using? Do you see any changes when you change your Acrobat/Reader Preferences to "Use Local Fonts"?
Have you tried doing any Preflight analysis of the font to see if the glyph widths vary?
