Acrobat hangs applications

Acrobat Professional 8.1.3 on Vista Business SP1, MS Office 2007 SP1, Reader 9.0.

A web page I needed to acess recently had files using some of the Acobat v9 features so I installed Reader 9. Ever since, when I try to create a pdf (either through the MS Office add-ins or Adobe PDF printer) the application hangs and has to be forcibly terminated. I've even left it for half an hour to see if it was just a long job but, by then, Vista has reported the application crash.

I've tried repairing Acrobat 8.1.3, to no avail. At the moment, I've uninstalled the add-ins and am avoiding using the Acrobat PDF printer - I've got a third-party pdf printer meanwhile, to allow me to continue creating pdf files.

Anyone else had this issue? Anyone know the fix?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2, Windows

The problem may be related to having Acrobat 8.1.3 and Reader 9 installed on the same machine. Because of their similarities, they experience conflicts especially in the area of PDF creation and browser integration. Here is a technical with more interoperability information.

Although you can install Adobe Acrobat 9.x or Adobe Reader 9.x on a computer that contains an installation of previous Acrobat versions, it is not recommended.

8pro and R9 is an allowed combination (the problems only really arise if two editions of Acrobat co-exist, as they'll argue over Distiller and the virtual printer hooks). R9 has no interest in printing and so shouldn't touch any of the Distiller files or app PDF export plugins. There is however a potential for fights with their helpers (speedlauncher/acrotray) getting too enthusiastic.

Hangs are always hard to track down with a print operation as it could be a whole chain of processes taking up your CPU, from the application to Distiller. In your position I'd run Process Explorer (from Sysinternals but now a free download from Microsoft's website) then try the offending operation, so the exact process consuming your CPU or RAM can be spotted. Let us know what is is and we may be able to see a workaround.

Thanks for the replies.

I found the interoperability page and checked Reader 9 would be OK before installing. It looks like it's just my laptop that has problems so, since everything else is working fine, I'll leave alone and stay with the alternative pdf creator (it seems to work well and has overcome another long-standing problem I had with the Acrobat version).

Thanks again.
