Attachment of .zip format files to PDF files

I am not able to open a .zip file when attahced to the pdf file. Is the .zip format files allowed to be attached to PDF files?

How do I programmatically, with the SDK or activeX or whatever, open a PDF file and save all attachments in the package to a temp directory?
