Bookmarks not displaying numbered headings in PDF file

I have seen this topic addressed in the forum before, but I still have no resolution.

Background: Acrobat 9 installed, using Word 2007 Acrobat plug-in to create PDF, XP

For headings in the Word document like “Chapter 1. SUMMARY”, “Chapter 2. INTRODUCTION”, the bookmarks are “SUMMARY”, “INTRODUCTION”, with the word "Chapter" and numeric part trimmed away in the created PDF. The headings in the doc are set up as distinct Word styles.

Thanks for any suggestions.

David

Hi dmg777az,

In Word, go to Preferences in the Acrobat ribbon and under the tab BookMarks check to see if the Styles are checked to be converted.

Hope this helps,

Hi David,

Go into Word 2007.
Assure that you have Adobe's PDFMaker configured to Create Bookmarks (under Settings tab)
and that you have The default configuration for Word Headings set with "Convert Word Headings to Bookmarks" selected
(under the Bookmarks tab).
Next, configure the "Chapter 1, 2, 3, ..." and sub-parts (1.1, 1.1.1, etc) as follows:
--| Use the built-in Heading 1, 2, 3, etc Word Headings.
--| With the cursor in first Heading 1; on the Home tab, in the Paragraph group, click Multilevel List.
--| In the List Library, select:

Chapter Hea(ding 1)
Heading 2–––––
Heading 3 ––––

n.b.,
In the same dialog you can "Define New Multilevel Lists..."
In all cases, for document Headings, use MS Word's built-in headings.
Perform any customization around them.
If you have not utilized Word's built-in Headings then content that is intended to provide a "headings" hierarchy
may "look good" in Word but actually do not have that hierarchy embedded into the Word file.
Output PDF will reflect what is rather than the "appearance".

From this configuration in MS Word, the output PDF will have the Chapter & number prefix present in the PDF Bookmarks.Be well...
