Can't generate LARGE Word files to PDF

I'm running Word 2007 on XP platform, with Acrobat v 8.1.3 Standard.

I have no problem generating PDF files from most of my Word docs.
But, I have 3 large Word docs (1300-1450 pages) that will not complete the process. It gets all the way through (it counts off all the pages in the information bar) then the doc disappears (as expected), but the PDF window never opens, and I don't get any error message. At this point Word is locked up (I need to use Task Manager to close the empty Word window).
I have tried to turn off all the PDF options, and it still won't work.
If I use the Word Print option, and then select the .PDF extension when I enter the name for the new doc, it does complete the process, but the TOC links do not work (but the rest of the links within the document DO work).

Thanks for any help

One option is turning off "Enable Accessibility and Reflow with Tagged PDF" in Preferences in Adobe PDF menu in Word.

Thank you for the reply.

I have turned off the "Enable accessibility..." option and it does not help. I have turned off all the Preferences in Adobe PDF menu in Word, and there is no change.
