Can't print page 1 because it has no page number

The front cover of my 600-page document is page 1 to Acrobat 9.4.6 Mac, as shown in the "(1 of XXX)"indicator in the toolbar, but no Acrobat page number appears in the box next to the "(1 of XXX)" indicator. For the inside front cover of this document the number "i" appears (which I did not assign and is wrong); and for the real page 1 the number "1" appears, which is also correct document numbering.

I want to print just the front cover (one-sided), and just the front cover + inside front cover (two-sided).

I have tried using Advanced > Document Processing > Number Pages... but cannot get anything to apply to the front cover because, apparently, it has no Acrobat page number to start with. Nor can I print, extract, or do anything to or with that page.

I know I can change the Acrobat numbering for the other pages, but how can I apply an Acrobat page number to the front cover?

Thanks,
Karen

Open the page thumbnails panel, click the first page once to select it, and from the options pull-down menu choose "number pages". The default will be "selected", i.e. just that page.

If you prefer to see the page numbers in their absolute form, open preferences - page display and toggle the "use logical page numbers" option. It won't affect the document, just the UI.

Yes, the UI needs to know the page number for the front cover. Unfortunately, this method doesn't work. No default number appears in the "from" field in the "number pages" dialog; it is blank. If I enter "1" in the "from" field, no number is applied to the front cover; no number ever appears in the box next to the "(1 of XXX)" indicator.

On the menu bar select "Edit => Preferences => Page Display" and uncheck the "Use logical page numbers" in the "Page Content and Information" seciton.More information is in Acrobat Help under "Preferences for viewing PDFs".

You can also opem the Pages Nav Pannel and select the pages you want to print.

Yes, that does allow "1" to appear in the box for the front cover! (On the Mac, it's Acrobat > Preferences.) Thanks, George!

This does allow me to do things to this page within Acrobat, including (and/or in addition to selecting it in the pages panel), printing this single cover page. For selecting a few pages, the pages panel is a great method.

But...when attempting to print many pages of this document using the print menu command, the print dialog box still shows this page with a blank; the "pages" (page range) box shows "(blank) - XX". Anything but "All" won't work.

Interesting....

Are you sure what you see as a blank or null is not a space character.

Why would you create a page id with a space or blank. You could use a prefix of 'Cover' and a small roman numeral.

Too late to check the full file now, I've already changed it per above. As for the print dialog, it is not a space character because when I replace it with "1" the preview window changes from the cover to an internal page (that has the document page number 1).

I didn't knowingly create it this way, and I have no idea how it happened. My procedure for this document is to make a PDF from a FrameMaker file that has no "cover". I then add a page from a separate PDF (of the cover, source file from QuarkXPress) at the beginning of the first PDF. The added cover page should take on a number of some kind. A mystery.
