I don't have an ADF, but I do scan a lot of pages for work (making PDFs out out journal articles). Each time I scan a page, Acrobat pauses and asks me if I want to "Scan more pages" or "Scanning complete". Problem it, the "Scanning complete" button is highlighted by default. I have to move back to the mouse, click the more pages button, and restart scanning.
On my old HP scanner the default was "more pages". Anyone know how I can change the default here? Is it an Acrobat thing or my scanner software? Given the number of pages I scan each day, ths could add up to a *lot* of time saved.

So maybe it's better to scan outside of Acrobat and then process all images with a batch sequence. The only problem is, that it's getting very time consuming if you want to produce multiple PDFs with different page counts out of a bunch of images.
ABBYY FineReader is a nice tool for scanning documents, even without an ADF. The OCR function and automation is much better than in Acrobat, but the output quality of image based searchable PDFs is worse, compared to Acrobat's “Optimize Scanned PDF“ and the “ClearScan” option in version 9. FineReader is also not able to produce PDF/A compliant files, even if there's a PDF/A output option.

I've done a lot of testing for converting paper based documents into searchable PDF/A compliant files. I couldn't find a piece of software that provides automated scanning, high quality OCR, high quality searchable PDF output and PDF/A compliance. Every software has it's disadvantages. :-(
