Create PDF from Scanner Default page Size?

Windows XP
HP 7140xi scanner / All-in-one
Adobe Pro 8.1.4

When I scan the page size default is legal size and the option to change it is grayed out.

As a consequence the scan of a letter size page is reduced in size and difficult to read.

All setting in printer properties, Distiller, and other places is for letter size.

How do I change the default page for the scanner function

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.4, Windows

you must set the page size on scanner's native interface to the size you want. do one of the following:
1) launch the scanner's native interface first (not acrobat) and set page size; direct output to the any app (acrobat, photoshop, whatever)
2) from acrobat's file menu create PDF> from scanner> custom scan. click options and on 'user interface' dropdown select 'show scanners native interface', and click Scan. The scanner's native interface will launch and you can set the page size.for more info contact scanner's support desk.
