Creating PDF tips

We are creating PDF files, usually from Word, for our website. We are running into a situation where a few people are calling saying they cannot open up the PDF's. Is there some type of guide to properly creating PDF's. I've found the ones relating to PDF/E, PDF/A, PDF/X, etc. but nothing on just creating a standard simple PDF for everyone.

Thanks

There could be many issues for those who can not open the PDF. The most likely is their version of Adobe Reader.

What are the versions of their Reader?

What is the OS and update level involved?

What is the web browser and version being used?

What PDF version are your PDF's being created for?

Do your PDF's include any embedded multimedia?

Are you posting LiveCycle Designer forms?

Their Readers could be any version.

Their OS could be anything.

Their web browser could be anything.

Have tried ver 5 and ver 6 creations

No embedded multimedia.

No LiveCycle Designer forms.

I would look at making the PDFs compatible to PDF standard 1.2 (Acrobat 3). But your users should be up to at least version 5 of Reader or Acrobat. If that is the case, then you can make your PDF's PDF/A compliant.

You might want to track the specific information for the users that are having problems. This might make isolating the issue much easier, one might find a common issue.
