File Size

Thank you for the very prompt answer to my question by duffjohnson.

In my question I said that a report that I scanned which previously ran about 250kb in 6 Pro was over 2.2mb in 8 Pro. I should have mentioned that it was 2.2mb after I used the Reduce File Size command in the Document menu. Both the scans in 6 Pro and 8 Pro were in color at 200dpi. I believe I should be able to get the same result in terms of file size in 8 as in 6 under similar circumstances. Mr. Johnson suggested that I scan in black and white instead of color. The document I scanned had color in it that I wanted to reproduce. I found in 6 Pro as well as 8 Pro black and white scans are grainy. I hope there is a more satisfactory solution for my problem. One possibile explanation for the large file size is that 8 Pro may be including a great deal more unseen information than I need. For example, I don't need OCR for every scan.

The OCR won't make a big difference to the file-size at all. There's something else going on.

You are entirely correct that you should be able to achieve the same file-size in both versions! There's something different about the way your files are being processed. Try using identical scans - use the same scan in A8 as you did in A6. This is to eliminate the possibility that one image is 8 bit while the other is 24 bit (for example).

Next, ensure that all settings are the same - ESPECIALLY JPEG compression settings.

Lastly, once you have a PDF produced by both A6 and A8, run the Optimizer on both, then Audit Space Usage. Carefully compare the contents of each file. The clue to the problem is in there somewhere!

After scanning an 8.5"x11" document on my HP LaserJet 3380 scanner, the .pdf file that resulted is 33"x45". How do I control the scale/size of the document I'm scanning?
