Problem Emailing PDF Portfolio to a Gmail Client

Has anyone had any problems sending a PDF portfolio to a gmail account?

Sent a pdf portfolio file to a client w/gmail. Got a bounce back message saying the file was an illegal attachment. I've been testing this on my computer by sending pdfs to my gmail account and I have the same problem. I can send pdfs with and w/o security, but when I create a portfolio it's a no go.

try zipping it and attach the zip to the email.

It doesn't like that either.

I do have a workable alternative - which is to send it via YouSendIt. It's just strange because we've emailed portfolios for a very long time without a problem, and now I can't send them to a gmail account. I can send a portfolio from gmail, but can't send it to gmail.

certainly, youSendit is a practical solution, particularly where a large file is going to several recipients. btw, how large is your troublesome file?

The original file is 2.5 mb.

For testing purposes I created a new portfolio (using completly different files). That portfolio is 425 kb.

I can't send either one to a gmail client.

I just did a test sending a portfilio to my gmail account from another non-gmail account and it worked. My gmail account is one you pay for (Premier Edition) and my portfolio only contained PDFs. Did any of your portfolios contain files other than PDFs? If so, what type were they?

No, they are all PDF files.

Hmmm...if you'd like to try sending me a test at my gmail address, you can email me using my address shown here and I'll send it to you.

Thanks so much. I sent you an email.

ETA: Well, bummer. George kindly offered to help me test my problem. I sent him a portfolio file which he emailed to my gmail account and he received the same error I did (illegal attachment).

I'm now checking w/gmail to see if I can find any other solutions.

Well, I'm having no luck w/gmail. Support is pretty non existent.

I think gmail thinks the pdf portfolio is an application file, and therefore an illegal attachment. I tried to attach a portfolio to an email I sent from gmail and the file shows (application/pdf) next to it, as opposed to just pdf. Maybe this is a new change w/gmail.

The only way I've been able to succesfully send a portfolio to a gmail client is when the gmail client is receiving their email outside of the gmail website (i.e receiving via Outlook works).

If anyone else emails portfolios to gmail clients I'd be interested in knowing if they are having any problems and whether the gmail client receives their email through the web or another email program.

This is a bit of a mystery. When I sent MelissaM's portfolio file to her at gmail, it was rejected by gmail. But when I sent the same file to two different gmail addresses of mine (one paid, one not), it went through just fine. This could mean there is some sort of gmail account setting that controls this, or it could be something else entirely.

The "application/pdf" is simply the correct MIME type for a PDF document and does not have any other meaning.

I suspect the difference you noted in the method of receiving an email is simply coincidental since the problem isn't receiving the email, it's in getting it sent in the first place. I successfully sent and received both my portfolios and yours when I sent them using a non-gmail account. I access gmail through their web site.

I'll do a bit more checking...

Ack, I see that now. I thought it was only showing application/pdf when you attached a portfolio. I see now that it says that whether it's regular pdf or a portfolio.

Hmm, I'll have to keep testing. I haven't checked the gmail settings yet. And of course now I've successfully received the latest test email you sent and that worked! I'll admit, I wasn't expecting that to happen.
