Is there a way to get crisp text output from non-postscript printers using acrobat reader? Does this require Acrobat pro.

The text appears to always be half-toned. (not using print as image)

Is there a way to force Reader to print to a higher resolution?

I'm using Windows XP and many different non-postscript printers, but especially Samsung CLP-610. THESE ARE NON_POSTSCRIPT PRINTERS.

Crisp text is standard from almost all windows programs and it's frustrating to loose font quality when moving to .pdfs.

Something to look into / try:
Your printer(s) ought to have come with the driver CD.
Try installing/using the standard PostScript printer with associated PPD file.
If the CD(s) are not available download driver(s) for appropriate printers from:
--| Vendor site
--| Adobe Site
--| 3rd Party driver download sites

Example:

Install instructions are in the Readme.wri file included in the download file.

I'm afraid I'm missing something here. This is a non-postscript printer. It has no postscript driver.

Is there a "standard Postscript printer" from Microsoft? I checked the link at adobe and found that it requires a "postscript printer matching the ppd file".

Since this is not a postscript printer, I assume that this will not work.

Getting good output on NON-Postscript printers from .pdf files using Acrobat Reader is the goal. If all other windows programs can produce crisp text, then surely Reader should be able to as well.

Please clarify if I've misunderstood your answer.

Yes, I believe you are correct.

While Acrobat Professional or better allows printing a PDF to an image with a specified resolution
I've not found that option in Adobe Reader or on the various releases "matrix" comparison pages.

It may be worth noting that output PDFs from Adobe software contain the converted PostScript-language page description(s).
I suspect this is why Adobe information for printing to paper typically points to the use of a PostScript Driver (& associated PPD).As the printer manufacturer is ultimately responsible for providing a PPD file &
many Samsung printers are supplied with proprietary GDI based drivers (QPDL)
with no option for standard PostScript you may be out of luck.

fwiw -
Samsung sells PostScript adapter ROM chips. Perhaps one is available for the model(s) you use?
