JDF vs XMP: confusion

I would like to know when is it more appropraite to use XMP or JDF. Both seem to provide the same capabilities.

My understadning is some PDF printer can receive Job tickets file or drivers can interpret the PDF file.

But if 2 or more apps are collaborating by providing PDF handling job info for each other I can't see what JDF would buy me over XMP. Both are extensible XML formats that can be accessed by both apps.

Your print partners will typically love a JDF file since it contains the intent of the job along with the files to fulfill the job itself. XMP is more like data about the ingredients in this instance. If it's confusing then load the Adobe Bridge and look at the XMP metacore on the right hand panel when you highlight an image for instance.

JDF files can be absorbed into most modern prepress workflows and prove to be quicker and more accurate than manual delivery - less hands on your job and in theory, better quality since you are setting up the job itself.

You can deliver JDF from Acrobat 7 Professional onwards and it's pretty slick in my opinion especially using the submission manager.

thank you. So PDF seems more "open" access.

My specific task is just about selecting paper type. dont care much about anything else.
I know it can be done via JDF but we also have a custom PDF cntrol that could read XMP data about what pages goes to what media at print time as long as a vendor can put easily place the xmp data before we get the file. That is really the only automation I need.

Benefit over JDF is that we would have nothing to do to handle the PDF since the control would do the job using the xmp data internally at prit run time. That is why I was looking at XMP.
In this case would you still evaluate JDF as the best solution ?
