PDF (CS4 generated) font display problem

A client is using an OTF font and when they generate a PDF from InDesign CS4 (PDF Library 9.0, compatibility 1.4) it views fine in Acrobat 9 and Apple's Preview app but not in Acrobat 7 or below; in the earlier versions most of the text displays as 'not defined' checked rectangular boxes, with the exception of the cap A and e acute for some reason.

We think we've narrowed the problem down to CS4; PDFs created in Indd CS 2 and 3 using the same font are fine in all versions of Acrobat we've tested.

The issue is urgent because we're set to roll out the fonts and the client's printers all use Acrobat 7 based rips.

Is anyone aware of a CS4 bug producing this error? Is there a workaround?

Many thanks in advance,

Joe

Hi Joe,

Not sure if this is causing your problem but a blog post at InDesign Secrets states that "Most of the fonts installed with CS4 are newer versions of fonts installed by CS3," goes into detail about this and workarounds for getting the older fonts back. Here's a link-

Hope this helps,
