visible text, vanish when printed

I have a pdf (several actually) the look on screen identical to the native file which is what I expect (INDCS3/MAC). When I print out the pages, the footer on the left-hand pages- which contain the folio and some text only print partially. 8 letters of a word just vanish, but the space they occupy is blank. In the template, this element resides on the master page.

So far I have tried the following:
-moved the element off the master, to the actual page
-recreated the pdf in higher resolution
-retyped the text on the master page

The templates were created from actual files from a previous issue of the magazine. This never happened in the previous version. My client is freaking out because they think this will happen with the files at the printer.

I'd be happy to send you a file so you can see this for yourself.

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro 8.1.2, Macintosh

perhaps - type set to overprint, font missing or not embedded, did you make this into a PDF/X1a ?

As Michael said...
The first thing that came to my mind when reading your post was Postscript overprint attributes might be set on your text. This would likely be an issue if you have near white text (or any vector object) on a colored background...so as to reverse out. I say near white because InDesign will not let PS overprint attributes to be placed on white text...that is text colored as Paper (from the default ID swatches, CMYK values all = 0, or RGB all = 255). You can however easily place PS overprint attributes on Spot colors such as cool gray which resemble near white on screen, or CMYK or RGB colors with near white values. If this is the case it's easy to soft proof in Acrobat and fix in InDesign.

You say CS3, so I'll assume Acrobat 8 Pro.

With the PDF open, select the Advanced menu > Print Production > Overprint Preview... does the folio info vanish as it does when printed? If so, there is PS overprint settings applied to it.Overprint attributes are easy to remove in ID...simply select the object then open the attribute panel...either the PS OP setting is on the fill, stroke or both...deselect the check box to remove. Oh, btw - the attributes panel and settings are the same to objects created in Illustrator too...only in Illustrator you can apply overprint attributes to white objects. You get a warning box, but you can choose to ignore it.

Now I realized that this may not be your specific problem...there are other possible causes to your issue...some of which Michael eluded to. I just ran with this one because it may be useful to someone else (if not you)...that, and I can't shut up once I get something in my head. :-)

Seeing the actual PDF will go a long way in diagnosing the true issue... michael will surely sniff out the problem. Feel free to send it my way too if you like.
