Is there a way to display a message (other than the one provided by Acrobat) when somebody tries to load/edit a pdf file?

Something like: "This is a Private File, please contact John Doe"

Do you mean you want to do this in addition to requiring a password to open a PDF? If so, you could create a PDF package (or file attachment). The opening PDF could display your message and the protected file would be an attached file.
