I've been through some of the Adobe tutorials, and they make use of a redaction menu under Tool>Protection, but I don't have it at all. My purchase of Acorbat X is fairly recent, and I have checked for updates and am current. Is there something I need to do to activate this? Any ideas?

If you're using Acrobat Standard, it does not include the redaction tools. It's available with Pro: http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/matrix.php

George - If I cover a word or logo on a pdf document with an opaque rectangle in Acrobat X Std, and then set Protection against editing the document so it is password protected, shouldn't that be secure? Sometimes I send files like this to my vendors, and if they send a copy back with their quote, the logo I covered is now uncovered. Any idea why?

No, it can't be considered secure, only minimally so. Most users wouldn't know how to delete content in a PDF that has password security restrictions that prevent it in Acrobat, but it's easy to defeat with readily available tools.

As to how it's being done by your vendors, it's hard to say without looking at a sample document. Exactly how are you adding the opaque rectangle?

I'm just opening the pdf, clicking the "draw rectangle" tool, and dragging a rectangle over the logo. I have it set to opaque so it just looks white like the document background. Then I go to Protection>Encrypt and use a password just for editing the document. When I save the doc and then open it again, it doesn't allow me to edit without entering the password. That's why I'm surprised with it is emailed back to me without the rectangles covering anything. I don't think the vendor is purposely spending time uncovering things, so whatever I'm doing is just not sticking.
