How to combine multiple file types into one PDF using Acrobat XI

Ali HanyalogluSeptember 7, 2012

There are many occasions when you will need to take different pages from different files and arrange them into a single PDF document. Acrobat XI now makes that task faster and easier than ever. Let me show you how. In Acrobat XI, I am going to choose the combine files into PDF command. This will open the combine files dialogue box, where I can add files from various locations. Here, I am going to choose a number of different files and different formats to merge together. The new thumbnail preview will allow me to look at the files before I bring them together. And working with them is just like working with presentation slides. I can go ahead and arrange this file to be the first one. And I can work with pages contained within the files too. I don't need these last two slides here, so I will remove them from the resulting PDF document. I can also bring this spreadsheet file in the middle of the presentation file. I will then go ahead and click combine files.Let's take a look at the resulting PDF file. It contains all the pages I need in exactly the right order. Thanks to Acrobat XI communicating more effectively is easier than ever with a single, clear, well-organized PDF file.

Hi Gary Greene,

You can find all the updates for Acrobat 9 here:
ftp://ftp.adobe.com/pub/adobe/acrobat/win/9.x/

Or, try running the Check for Updates command under the Help menu.
Thanks,
Lori

Hi Gary Greene,

Do you have all the point updates for Acrobat 9 installed? Acrobat support for Windows 7 didn’t start until at least the 9.2 update.

Thanks,
Lori

I have Acrobat Adobe 9 Std, I am using Office 10, and Windows 7. Merging files into one pdf was simple until I upgraded to Windows 7. Now I can merge 3 pdf file into one pdf file but the content of one of the templates missing. Lets say I have 3 pages to a template, when I combine 3 pdf file templates, the content of one of the templates is missing. The pages are there but the pages are blank….UGH

Hi Pedro Barbosa,

You could probably do this using JavaScript but you’d need to be able to program the pattern.

Alternatively, you could use the Combine Files dialog using the List View. This will allow you to see all files starting in 001 and just delete the one that doesn’t match.

Thanks,
Lori

Hi Antoinette Pienaar,

Try running the Repair Acrobat Installation from under the Help menu to see if it corrects the problem.

Hi Antoinette,

Trying running the Repair Acrobat command from under the Help menu. If this doesn’t correct the problem, make sure you have all the latest point updates. Third, you can try doing a repair of your Office installation.

Thanks,
Lori

Hi Robert,

Do you already have the files open somewhere? If so, try closing them first. I’ve experienced this error using the combine command before on PPTX files but not other file types. Also, make sure you have the latest updates for Acrobat installed.
To insert other files, you can use the commands under the Tools pane > Pages panel.

Thanks,
Lori
