Catia Compatibility in Acrobat 9 Pro Ext

We have about 12 licences for Acrobat 9 Pro Extended for the purposes of reviewing CAD data from many sources. Our primary CAD tool is Catia V5 and I've recently cleared all of our other software for Catia V5 R20 - all except Acrobat (we're using 9.4.0, released on 10/5/2010). I can't seem to find any documentation from Adobe that shows the supported CAD files for each release, but I saw something online that said 9.3.4 supported Catia V5 up to R19 SP4. Do you think support will be added for R20 in the 9.x branch of Acrobat? In the Defense/Aerospace industry and the Automotive, all the big players have already started moving to R20 and I fear Acrobat will be left behind. From what I understand, there are few differences in the actual CAD data from R19 SP4 to R20 SP0/SP2. I'm just hoping Adobe/Tech Soft 3D doesn't leave us hanging and require an upgrade to Acrobat X to maintain compatibility. Also, is there any way to get in the Beta program for Acrobat X?

My Product Information:
Acrobat Pro Extended 9.3.1, Windows

Acrobat 9 Pro Extended will support Catia V5 R19 once you have applied this patch (part of 9.2):

The 9.4 update issued this week addresses security and performance issues but does not affect supported 3D file versions. You can read a complete list of the changes from this page:

We are not in a position to make any comments regarding future versions of Adobe software or support for those versions that may or may not be released by third-party vendors.

I'm using 9.4.0, so the patch has already been applied (the "My Product Information" is wrong because 9.3.1 is the highest version available in the drop-down list). Since Acrobat X will be likely be released within one month (according to Adobe.com and Adobe's CEO), what are the chances that the release notes will go into detail about the CAD files types and versions that are supported for 3D Import? It seems to me that this would be a fairly important piece of information to provide - assuming the primary purpose of Pro Extended is to import 3D data.

Details of future products will be made available by Adobe on the release date. We are not able to provide any hints as to what features that software may have, or when that release date may be; however at that time customers will naturally be provided with the sort of information necessary to make purchasing decisions, and that will include details about capabilities to read and write different types of file format - we will also be able to answer any questions you have on these forums.

Adobe Acrobat Pro X with the 3D PDF Converter from Tetra 4D will allow users to leverage the CATIA V5R20 format, along with several other new formats. Details can be found here -

Please see www.tetra4d.com/3D-PDF for complete details for support of new and existing users.

I'm definitely watching Tetra 4D closely :). We really have no interest in updating all of our Acrobat 9 licenses to Acrobat X at this point, but I would like to upgrade the machines that we use to create 3D PDFs. Will this create any compatibility problems between Acrobat X + Tetra 4D and our Acrobat 9 Pro installations? For example, can we create the 3D PDFs in Acrobat X and edit them (the PDFs, not the 3D data) in Acrobat 9 Pro?

The 3D PDF files produced by Acrobat X (using the Tetra4D plugin or not) will continue to be editable in Acrobat 9 Pro Extended - there has been no change to the ISO specification describing the 3D annotation object, nor any significant change to the 3D API. Meshes, stored views, animations, JavaScripts etc. will work as before.

The only PDF files produced by Acrobat X that aren't backward-compatible are PDF portfolios, and files which have 256-bit AES password protection applied. Some files may not be fully recognized (such as PDF/A-2) but they display and render correctly.

So I take it that Adobe Pro extended 9 does not and will not support Catia R20 for 3D PDF. Is that correct?

With Adobe Pro Extended 9 I just opened the Catia file from the file open menu. Will it work that way in X also?

There are no plans to update any aspect of the Acrobat 9 Family except to apply security patches. Acrobat 9 Pro Extended is now discontinued, so there will certainly not be any new import filters available from Adobe.

Acrobat X Pro will not open 3D files other than those in U3D or PRC format. The translation engine in Acrobat 9 Pro Extended which allowed users to open (and convert) a range of other 3D CAD/CAM formats was removed, and is now sold as a commercial plugin by Tetra4D (see the post above). Their plugin will be kept updated to support newer 3D formats, but any questions relating to the plugin must be addressed to Tetra4D themselves. It is *not* an Adobe product and we do not provide support for third-party plugins via these forums.
