Is it possible to use a pdf created in indesign with place holders for variable data and replace those placeholders with actual links to the database and have the pdf dynamically grow and shrink with the variables without using xmpie? I would like to do this within acrobat itself if possible. Thanks

If you're talking about plain text data then you can use a dynamic LiveCycle (XFA) Form. It can connnect to a DB and grow dynamically with the size and quantity of the contents

But if you are talking about something fancier like building pages in a brocure, then it's problematic and this is exactly the kind of thing you need external tools for. Although you may be able to get away with some fancy FDF tricks. It all depends on the details of what you want.
